Please can you introduce a service that would warn Nationwide customers via text or e-mail if they do not have the efficient funds when making a payment via Direct Debit so they can prevent going overdrawn and incurring charges.

Thank you for your suggestion. We have now (October 2012) enhanced our systems to provide extra text alerts.
Customers can now set a low balance alert that will let them know that they are close to a zero balance or their overdraft limit (if applicable). Or set a high balance alert to let them know that a large credit like a salary payment has been paid into their account.
Our Internet Bank customers can already receive a mini statement alert, available on a weekly or monthly basis, detailing their balance and last five transactions. Find more details hereYou can register for the service and manage your alerts via the Internet Bank. Or, If you’re not an internet user, call 08457 30 20 10 or drop into your local branch. And since the summer of 2012 our SavingsWatch service has been there to help you keep track of your savings rates via text and email too. More details here
